// The situation

web design and seo agency that agents referrals from partner agencies that i need to stay in touch with. Does cold outreach across email, linkedin and instagram. Needs reminders to follow up, needs easy access to contacts, needs integration with gmail. Currently using hubspot free but cant email direct from the platform without having hubspot branding on the email or upgrading. Have considered folk crm for it's ease of use and linkedin plugin but i'd ideally like to avoid the cost but I can afford it if it is the best option. It looks like I can upgrade to hubspot starter for £9 a month. FOlk crm standard is $24 a month Lead channels: Email, Instagram DM, Web form, Referrals, LinkedIn. Inquiry volume: 10–50. Team size: Just me.

Yes.

You need a simple CRM — and it's Folk, not HubSpot.

What's really going on

You run an agency on relationships — referrals from partner agencies, warm DMs, LinkedIn threads. That's a memory-and-follow-up job, not a pipeline-automation job. HubSpot Free was built for inbound teams sharing leads; you're one person nurturing partners across five channels. The branded-email wall is HubSpot telling you the truth: you've outgrown the free tier's purpose, not its price.

What to do instead

  1. Folk (~$24/mo — check current pricing) — the LinkedIn plugin pulls partners and prospects into one contact list you actually open. That's the whole game for you.
  2. Gmail + Folk's send-from-your-inbox — emails go out as you, no branding, threaded in your normal inbox.
  3. A weekly 30-min "who's gone quiet" habit — Folk's reminders surface it, but the discipline is yours.

Today: import your HubSpot contacts into Folk's free trial, tag them "partner / prospect / client," and set a follow-up reminder on the five referral sources you'd hate to lose.

What you're being oversold

Anyone pointing you at HubSpot Starter (£9) is solving the branding symptom, not your problem — you'll hit the next paywall inside a quarter, and Sales Hub climbs fast. Apollo, Outreach and the outbound stack are for 20-person sales teams; ignore them. The cost of staying put isn't a number — it's the partner referral that stops coming because you forgot to reply for six weeks.

When to revisit this

When you hire a second person doing outreach, or referrals stop being your top channel.

The part worth getting right

The one call is whether your cold outreach is really cold — or warm dressed up as cold. If most of your "cold" LinkedIn and Instagram DMs are second-degree, referral-adjacent, or people you've met once, Folk is right and you'll thank it every week. If you're genuinely sending 200 cold emails a week to strangers, Folk will feel thin and you'll want a sequencer bolted on — different tool, different £70+/mo bill, different habit. Same £24 decision, two very different next years.
