No.
You don't need a CRM.
What's really going on
Referrals are trust-based and low-volume. You don't have a pipeline problem; you have a memory problem. What you actually need is a place to remember who referred whom, what stage each contact is at, and when to follow up. One person plus referrals rarely means more than a handful of live conversations at a time.
What to do instead
- Zoho Bigin (free for 1 user) — a dead-simple pipeline with reminders. Add each referral as a contact, tag who sent them, set a follow-up date.
- Google Sheets (free) — one row per lead: name, referred by, product interest, last contact, next action. That's it.
- A weekly habit — every Monday morning, 15 minutes, open the sheet and message anyone who's gone quiet.
Do this in the next 30 minutes: open Bigin, create one pipeline called "Referrals", add stages (New → Meeting → Sample sent → Ordered), and drop in every live contact you can remember from the last 30 days.
What you're being oversold
Someone will try to sell you Salesforce, Zoho One, or Veeva "because pharma". Ignore them. Those are built for reps managing hundreds of doctors across territories — not one person working a referral network. The cost of doing nothing here isn't lost deals; it's forgetting to follow up on a warm intro and letting the relationship cool.
When to revisit this
When you're tracking more than 30 active contacts, or you hire a second person.
The part worth getting right
Figure out what "pharmaceutical field" means for YOU. If you're selling to pharmacies and distributors, a simple pipeline is enough — Bigin handles it. If you're calling on doctors and hospitals with samples, visit logs, and compliance rules, that's a different animal and a plain CRM will fail you inside a year. One fix if you're B2B distribution. A different fix if you're medical rep work with sample tracking. Which one are you?
