// The situation

New business development team working inside a larger business that focuses on servicing and growing business with a fixed existing customer base. The sales team is shared now but this new business will soon get a dedicated sales team. Current there are 4 BDMs in the marketing team that drive growth both directly and through engaging the existing sales team. Existing sales team doesn't use crm. We have Oracle fusion cloud crm but only use to track opportunities for orders forecast purposes. I need to organize, prioritize, optimize etc this new sales team that will engage new custome rs. Lead channels: Phone calls, Email, Referrals, Web form. Inquiry volume: 10–50. Team size: 4–10.

The verdict · Sep 22, 2026

Yes.

You need a simple CRM — but not Oracle Fusion for this.

What's really going on

You're standing up a hunting team inside a farming company. Four BDMs, growing to ten, chasing 10–50 new inquiries across phone, email, referrals and a web form — that's real pipeline volume that needs shared ownership, not a spreadsheet, and not an ERP-bolt CRM built for order forecasts. The fact that the current sales team refuses to touch Fusion is a warning: force the new team onto the same tool and they'll do the same thing. What you actually need is a light system the BDMs will open every morning, plus a clean rule for when a qualified lead crosses into Fusion as an opportunity.

What to do instead

  1. HubSpot Free CRM — free, unlimited users — best for teams of 3-10+ on inbound email who need shared ownership. Use it as the BDMs' shared inbox + pipeline; wire the web form straight into it.
  2. Pipedrive — roughly $14–15/user/month, check current pricing — pick this instead if you want strict pipeline stages and a strong mobile app for BDMs in the field.
  3. Habit: one weekly 20-minute pipeline review where each BDM walks their top 5 deals. This is what makes any CRM stick.

First action, today: open HubSpot Free, create one pipeline with 5 stages (New → Contacted → Qualified → Proposal → Won), paste the web form embed onto your site, and forward the shared inbox address into it. One person, 30 minutes.

What you're being oversold

Someone will tell you to extend Oracle Fusion Sales to the BD team "for consistency." That's the enterprise CRM your existing reps already avoid — same tool, same outcome. Someone else will pitch Outreach, Salesloft or Apollo; those are for 20+ person outbound orgs running cold sequences at scale and solve a prospecting problem you don't have at 10–50 inquiries. Doing nothing costs you the referrals and web-form leads that quietly rot in inboxes while BDMs chase the loud ones.

When to revisit this

When the BD team crosses 10 reps or you start losing track of which BDM owns which account.

The part worth getting right

One judgment call decides this: is Fusion the system of record for BD too, or just the handoff point once a deal is real? If it's the system of record, you need a Fusion Sales rollout with an adoption plan — and a hard answer to why the current team ignores it. If it's the handoff point, you give BDMs a lighter hunting tool and design one clean trigger that pushes a qualified opportunity into Fusion. Pick wrong and you either drown a scrappy team in enterprise screens, or build a shadow CRM that breaks the day a deal needs to become an order.
